Lantmännen’s Climate & Nature program scales up – covering Spendrups’ entire malting barley requirement

Lantmännen and Spendrups are scaling up their collaboration within Climate & Nature – Lantmännen’s program for farming of the future. In 2026, the program will cover Spendrups’ entire annual requirement for conventionally grown malting barley. The initiative demonstrates how demand from customers across the food value chain can drive concrete measures in Swedish agriculture. For Spendrups, this is estimated to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 5,000 metric tons of CO₂e.

By the 2026 harvest, cultivation within the collaboration with Spendrups will have contributed to a cumulative reduction of 12,600 metric tons of CO₂e. The results are driven by Climate & Nature, which includes concrete measures to reduce climate impact and strengthen biodiversity. The program is part of Lantmännen’s Farming of the Future vision, which aims to achieve productive, profitable and climate-neutral agriculture by 2050. Since its launch in 2015, the program has reduced the climate footprint by up to 45 percent and today covers wheat, barley, rye and oats.

"Spendrups is an important partner for us, and its long-term commitment has enabled us to scale up Climate & Nature for malting barley. Going from 10 to 100 percent in four years shows what we can achieve when farmers, Lantmännen and customers work together. We can turn ambitious targets into practical action, scale up rapidly and already today deliver on the climate targets that a majority of companies in the food value chain have adopted for 2030. Together, we are strengthening Swedish agriculture, driving the transition toward a more sustainable food value chain and making products with a lower climate footprint more widely available to consumers," says Per Arfvidsson, Executive Vice President & CTO, Lantmännen Group.

From 10 to 100 percent in four years

Malting barley is the main ingredient in beer production and Spendrups’ largest raw material. The collaboration with Lantmännen began in 2022, when 10 percent of Spendrups’ malting barley requirement was grown according to Climate & Nature. The collaboration has since been scaled up gradually, and after just four years Spendrups has reached its goal of sourcing 100 percent of its malting barley through Climate & Nature.

"This is a major and important step for Swedish beer production and for Spendrups. We are showing that large-scale transition is possible. Malting barley is our largest raw material, and we have now reached our goal of reducing the climate impact from malting barley, bringing us very close to our 2030 climate targets. Collaboration across the value chain can turn climate targets into concrete action. Through our investments and commitment, Lantmännen has been able to scale up the program and more Swedish farmers have been able to transition their cultivation. This is a major step for us, for Swedish agriculture and for our customers. We want to be a long-term partner that helps customers achieve their climate targets," says Henrik Åström, CEO of Spendrups.
