Lantmännen's cultivation program for the agriculture of the future

Climate &
Nature

Since its inception in 2015, Climate & Nature has enabled the climate footprint of Swedish-grown grain to be reduced by up to 45 percent, and the program continues to evolve as new research and technology development create new opportunities. The program includes concrete measures that reduce climate impact and benefit biodiversity in grain cultivation.

As an agricultural cooperative, we take responsibility from field to fork. Climate & Nature is part of Lantmännen's long-term work within Agriculture of the Future – with the goal of contributing to climate-neutral agriculture by 2050. Since its inception in 2015, Climate & Nature has reduced the climate footprint of Swedish grain cultivation by up to 45 percent and continues to develop in line with new research, technology development and increased climate ambitions.

The programme currently covers wheat, durum wheat, barley, rye and oats and meets both market demand for more sustainably produced food and farmers' need for long-term solutions in the transition. Climate & Nature is based on contract cultivation between Lantmännen and affiliated farmers, with clear conditions for implementation on the farm and compensation for the work and additional costs that the transition entails.

Climate & Nature – a Nordic programme

The program started in Sweden in 2015 and has since expanded to Finland and Denmark. Today, the program is used as a common model for sustainable grain cultivation in the Nordic region.

Concrete actions of the programme

Within Climate & Nature, cereals are grown according to defined criteria that focus on actual emission reductions in the cultivation stage, while at the same time biologisticsare many in the countryside.

There is a desire to change agriculture and I speak for many of my colleagues, but we need help to create economic sustainability as well. There are small margins in agriculture.

Climate & Nature celebrates 10 years

For ten years, Lantmännen's Climate & Nature cultivation programme has driven the development towards more sustainable agriculture. Through innovation, collaborations and concrete measures, we have taken important steps towards the future of agriculture together with farmers and customers. Follow our journey and discover the biggest milestones – from the start to today.

Certification

Climate & Nature is certified through a third-party audited system that ensures that both cultivation measures and climate calculations meet clearly defined requirements.

How we calculate

In Climate & Nature, climate impact is calculated based on established methods and average data from Swedish cereal cultivation.
