How it works
The program

Climate & Nature is a cultivation program where grain is contracted according to defined criteria that reduce climate impact and benefit biodiversity.

Climate & Nature has been developed together with farmers and defines how sustainable cultivation can be implemented in practice, including through precisesod ingfryics, the use of fossil-free plant nutrients and efforts for biodiversity such as larch plots and flowering zones.  . Farmers who cultivate according to Climate & Nature are financially compensated for the measures they implement, which creates the conditions for both climate benefits and economic sustainability in the transition.

The programme has been developed to focus on emission reduction – not carbon offsetting. This means that Climate & Nature measures reduce emissions where they occur, in grain cultivation, rather than offsetting emissions through external compensation solutions.

A dynamic cultivation program

Climate & Nature is a dynamic programme that is continuously developed in line with new research, technological development and practical experience from agriculture. Measures and criteria are gradually updated to ensure that the programme follows the pace of transition required to achieve climate neutrality in the long term.

Since its inception in 2015, the programme has contributed to significant emission reductions in cereal cultivation by phasing out the majority of fossil emissions linked to inputs and work steps on the farm. Going forward, the focus is on reducing biogenic emissions, such as nitrous oxide emissions from soil, and on developing criteria and methods for increased carbon sequestration.

Climate & Nature thus combines climate benefits, biodiversity and productivity in a coherent system that makes it possible to both transition and scale up agriculture

Contract cultivation

Climate & Nature is based on contract cultivation between Lantmännen and affiliated farmers.

Traceability and mass balance

In Climate & Nature, a mass balance principle is applied, which means that grain grown according to the program is not kept separate all the way from farm to finished product.

Certification

Climate & Nature is certified through a third-party audited system that ensures that both cultivation measures and climate calculations meet clearly defined requirements.

How we calculate

In Climate & Nature, climate impact is calculated based on established methods and average data from Swedish cereal cultivation.
