Development & progress

Since Climate & Nature was launched in 2015, the programme has been developed in line with the pace of transition required by the Paris Agreement, where emissions need to be gradually halved by 2050 in order to achieve the climate goals.

Since its inception in 2015, the programme has grown in both scope and actual impact, with establishment in more markets, more connected crops and further developed criteria. As more farmers, products and value chains have been connected, the programme has succeeded in contributing to substantial measurable emission reductions and long-term improvements for biodiversity.

Climate & Nature is based on practically implemented measures in cultivation and focuses on reducing emissions where they occur. We continuously develop the programme in line with new research, practical experience and increased demands for the pace of change. New criteria are added and existing ones are further developed in line with technological development and increased knowledge. In this way, Climate & Nature functions both as a tool for actual transition in agriculture and as a platform where new solutions can be tested, verified and scaled.

The starting point for Climate & Nature

Lantmännen is launching the Climate & Nature cultivation programme as a first overall step towards more sustainable grain farming. By connecting Kungsörnen's flour products, contract cultivation of measures such as larch plots, sustainable plant nutrients, precision farming and eco-driving begins, resulting in approximately 20 percent lower climate impact compared to average conventional wheat cultivation in Sweden.

    More measures and new products

After five years, the programme is developed with additional climate and biodiversity measures. Fossil-free fuel and flowering zones are introduced, and the overall climate impact is further reduced to around 30 per cent compared to the reference year 2015.

AXA and Kungsörnen connect products in Sweden

In 2020, the range of Climate & Nature-connected products will be expanded to also include AXA'siconic oatmeal and Kungsörnen's Pannkakor.

Climate & Nature introduced in Finland

The program expands geographically as "Ilmasto & Luonto" introducesit to farmers in Finland through contractcultivation of Finnish rye.

    Paulig joins as a partner

Commitment to the programme in Sweden is increasing and Paulig is joining as a partner. Cereals grown according to Climate & Nature are now also used in tortillas, which provides the opportunity to reduce the climate impact in new product categories.

    KRAFFT connects horse feed

Anumber of KRAFFT products are joining the programme, which means that horse feed will also be part of the cultivation programme.

    Steps towards fossil-free cultivation

One of the program's biggest development steps is taken when fossil-free plant nutrients are introduced as a climatemeasure. This makes it possible to achieve up to 45 percent lower climate impact compared to 2015.

Vaasan connects the first Finnish products

The Vaasan brand connects the first consumer products in Finland to Climate & Nature and enables a broader establishment of the program in the Finnish market.

    More biodiversity measures

The programme in Sweden is being strengthened with new criteria for biodiversity, such as buffer zones, legume-rich grasslands and bird fields.  First fossil-free harvest: a historic step is taken when the first fossil-free harvest is harvested within the framework of the programme.

    A decade of progress

Klimat & Natur celebrates its 10th anniversary and celebrates a decade of innovation and sustainable development. Coop joins with its product "Coop oatmeal" and  both Korvbrödsbagarn and Hatting are adapting, which means that even more products grown with a lower climate impact are available on the shelf. From vision to reality – together we have taken big steps towards the agriculture of the future!

McDonald's joins as a partner in Finland

McDonald's is the first Finnish partner to join the program, which also marks the start of contracted wheat cultivation in Finland. Wheat that will cover the need for all Big Mac breads for the Finnish market.

    Climate & Nature Certification

Climate & Nature is certified through a third-party system that ensures that both cultivation measures and climate calculations meet independently audited requirements, which strengthens the transparency and credibility of the program.

A dynamic cultivation program

The cultivation program is dynamic and continuously developed to apply the latest knowledge and technology. New measures are being added continuously. The programme has a measurable effect and has resulted in significant emission reductions from the cultivation of cereals since its inception in 2015. At present, we have phased out the vast majority of fossil emissions, and we will in the future focus more on biogenic emissions in the form of reducing nitrous oxide emissions from the arable land and increase carbon sequestration.

* Up to 45% less climate impact compared to average Swedish grain cultivation in 2015.

Climate & Nature

In  the ssamband withKlimat & Na tur's 10th anniversary sheds light on the development and crucial perspectives of theprogramme, and some of the people who drive the development forward. The series is both a look back at the lessons learned from the program's first ten years and a look forward to the issues, challenges and opportunities that are now shaping the future of agriculture.

The articles deepen the understanding of how Climate & Nature has developed over time – from an early pilot program to an established tool for converting cereal cultivation on a large scale.
