Lantmännen is an active partner in the green transition of agriculture. By collaborating with farmers and other actors in the value chain, we contribute with sustainable solutions, innovation and relevant knowledge. Our focus is on developing the agriculture of the future through research in agricultural technology, robust and climate-resilient crops and resource-efficient methods

Climate change adaptation and the transition to a low-carbon economy require investment and cooperation between business and policy. Lantmännen has high ambitions in climate work and a structured process for identifying and assessing climate-related risks and opportunities. We follow the GHG Protocol to map and reduce emissions throughout the value chain, from our own operations (Scope 1), purchased energy (Scope 2) to indirect emissions from, for example, primary production, transport and use of products (Scope 3).

With the support of SMHI's climate scenarios, we analyse how climate change affects our facilities, and we have identified risks linked to extreme weather events. At the same time, we see business opportunities in solutions that reduce climate impact, such as grain with lower emissions. Through initiatives such as Future Agriculture and the Climate & Nature cultivation programme, as well as strategic partnerships, we contribute to more climate-smart agriculture and reduced emissions in line with international climate goals.

Goals and outcomes

  • In primary production, we aim to create the conditions for halving climate impact every ten years and achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Through Lantmännen’s cultivation program Climate & Nature, criteria for reduced climate impact in the grain value chain are gradually being introduced. The savings within Climate & Nature amounted to 14,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents in 2025, and 45% compared with 2015.

  • The target for our own production is to reduce climate impact by 50% by 2030, compared with the base year 2019. Climate emissions from our own production decreased by 54% compared with 2019. This means the target has been achieved five years ahead of schedule. An interim goal is to reach fossil‑free production by 2050. In 2025, we reached 81%, which means we have taken significant steps in phasing out fossil‑based energy.

  • For purchased transport, climate impact relative to turnover must be halved by 2030, with 2019 as the base year. Emissions from purchased transport decreased by 12% during 2025 compared with 2024. However, the pace of reduction must increase substantially to reach the 2030 target. One possible way forward is increased use of biogas, where Lantmännen is planning its own biogas facility, which is expected to accelerate the transition.

Climate impact from Scope 1,2 and 3

For 2025, Lantmännen is initiating full climate reporting covering scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. This means that climate‑impacting emissions occurring in the upstream and downstream value chain are included, in addition to those from our own operations. The reporting covers all of Lantmännen’s divisions and business areas and is presented below. Our largest climate‑impacting emissions fall under the category “Purchased goods and services”, where the purchase of grain accounts for the majority, followed by animal products. The Other category includes emissions from, for example, soy, palm oil, diesel, and alkylate petrol.
