Lantmännen joins expert panel at Livsmedelsdagarna – sustainability claims must stand up to scrutiny
The discussion at Livsmedelsdagarna focused on new EU requirements and how food companies can make their sustainability claims clear and credible. The panel brought together perspectives from the food industry, retail, the legal sector, and civil society.
Lantmännen operates across the value chain, from farming to food production, and therefore addresses sustainability issues at several stages of the food system. The measures begin on the farm, while customers and consumers need to be able to trust the results that are communicated.
“Taking the next step requires new solutions. Lantmännen sees third-party certification as a natural way to meet new legislation and clear customer requirements. It is a prerequisite for continuing to scale up Lantmännen’s Climate & Nature farming program,” says Claes Johansson, Head of Sustainability at Lantmännen.
For Lantmännen, this means being able to demonstrate both which measures are implemented in farming and the impact they deliver.

Livsmedelsdagarna: Livsmedelsdagarna 2026 takes place on September 23–25 in Tylösand. The seminar on September 23 was titled “From sustainability promises to verified evidence – how can the food industry meet the new EU requirements?” The discussion was organized by Sigill, with representatives from Sigill, KRAV, Hållbar Livsmedelskedja/WWF, Lantmännen, Systembolaget, ICA, and MarLaw taking part in the panel.
Climate & Nature: Lantmännen’s farming program for reducing climate impact and increasing biodiversity. Independent verification is intended to strengthen credibility and create better conditions for the program’s continued growth.
Certification of Climate & Nature: In May 2026, Lantmännen became the first company to join Sigill’s new standards for climate measures in crop production and for calculating the impact of those measures. Climate & Nature is therefore being developed into a certified program with independent verification. In Sweden and Finland, production will be ready for assessment under the standards from the 2026 harvest onward.
How the certification works: The certification covers both measures implemented on farms and the calculation of their impact. Independent certification bodies verify compliance with the requirements. The purpose is to ensure that companies and consumers can trust that communicated climate results are based on measures that have actually been implemented and on verified calculations.
Climate & Nature: The program was launched in 2015 and covers crops including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Products from the program have reduced their climate footprint by up to 45 percent compared with the program’s starting point.
