Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin visits Lantmännen – focus on food production and preparedness
The pancake production facility in Laholm is one of many concrete examples of how domestic food production contributes to national preparedness. But the issue is larger than any single facility. To strengthen Sweden’s ability to withstand disruptions and crises, the country needs a resilient chain from agriculture and critical inputs to processing, transport and distribution, Lantmännen says.
"Sweden’s food preparedness starts with strong and growing domestic food production. When the entire chain, from field to fork, is strengthened and production increases, the country is also better equipped to manage disruptions and crises," says Patrik Myrelid, Director of Strategy at Lantmännen.
Following today’s visit, Lantmännen highlights three concrete measures to strengthen preparedness. Consumers and the public sector need to choose Swedish food. Sweden needs to build domestic production of critical inputs, not least fertilizer, where dependence on imports is currently high. Preparedness stocks also need to include both grain and the inputs required to produce food.
Lantmännen works long-term to strengthen Swedish food production and improve the conditions for resilience, investment and competitiveness across the country. This is reflected in major investments in new capacity and infrastructure, including the new pea protein facility in Lidköping and the new grain facility in Uddevalla.
Facts and more information
Lantmännen across the entire value chain: Lantmännen operates across the entire chain, from agriculture and grain to processing and food. This creates the conditions to strengthen Swedish food production, food supply capacity and preparedness.
Three priority measures for stronger preparedness: Lantmännen highlights the importance of the public sector and consumers choosing Swedish food, Sweden building domestic production of critical inputs, and preparedness stocks including both grain and the inputs required to produce food.
Inputs and fertilizer: Strong food preparedness requires not only food production, but also access to what is needed to produce food. Lantmännen therefore highlights the need to build domestic production and storage of critical inputs, not least fertilizer.
Major investments in production and preparedness: Lantmännen is investing in new capacity and infrastructure to strengthen Swedish food production. Examples include the pea protein facility in Lidköping, where Lantmännen is investing SEK 1.2 billion, and the grain facility in Uddevalla, where the investment amounts to SEK 500 million.
Report on sustainable growth: Lantmännen is one of the initiators of the report Grön uppväxling, together with LRF, Livsmedelsföretagen, Arla and Scan Sverige. The project sets out a path for sustainable growth in Swedish agriculture and food production.
