Lantmännen first to adopt Sigill’s new climate standards – certifying this year’s harvest

Lantmännen is the first to adopt Sigill’s new standards for climate measures in crop production and for calculating their effects. Climate claims based on verified standards and independent assurance provide customers and consumers with better conditions to assess these efforts. Through this initiative, Lantmännen’s cultivation program Climate & Nature will become certified. In Sweden and Finland, production is already prepared to be audited against the standards starting from the 2026 harvest, closely followed by Denmark.

Sigill’s new standards enable credible monitoring of climate measures while meeting the requirements of new EU legislation under the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition directive, which requires companies to substantiate and verify that sustainability labels are based on a certified third-party standard.

The new standards are being implemented within Lantmännen’s Climate & Nature cultivation program, which will thereby become certified. In Sweden and Finland, from the 2026 harvest, Lantmännen will offer products based on Sigill-certified grain, including climate measures in cultivation and the calculation of climate impact in accordance with the upcoming standard for certified effect calculation. This further strengthens the program’s credibility, transparency and distinctiveness.

"We have decided to take the lead. For us, it is crucial to demonstrate both which measures are carried out in cultivation and the effect they deliver. The standards provide a common and credible foundation for the industry. Through Climate & Nature, we can offer products based on grain where the climate impact from cultivation is verified to be lower than a defined baseline, calculated in accordance with Sigill’s standard,” says Claes Johansson, Chief Sustainability Officer at Lantmännen.

Common standards create transparency across the value chain

Ensuring lower climate impact requires both concrete measures in cultivation and calculations of their effects, something that is becoming increasingly important as EU requirements tighten and expectations for transparency grow.

The new crop production standard ensures that climate measures and measures to support biodiversity are implemented at farm level. In parallel, a standard for effect calculation is being launched, enabling transparent and traceable quantification of climate benefits. Together, Sigill’s standards provide an integrated solution covering both the implementation of measures in cultivation and the verification of their actual impact. Compliance is followed up through independent third-party audits, ensuring that requirements are met in practice.

"Certification is not just about control. It is about creating claims that stand up to scrutiny. As requirements become more stringent, the industry needs common structures to rely on. Lantmännen is taking the lead, and we welcome others to join us in building on this together,” says Ann-Louise Ingvarson, CEO of Sigill.

From farm to fork – offering to customers and consumers

Through Climate & Nature, Lantmännen can offer a program based on certified grain. This creates new opportunities for the entire food value chain to work with and communicate climate benefits in a credible way.

"This enables us to take the next step together with our customers and partners in supporting their work toward Science Based Targets, while offering products with verified lower climate impact all the way to the consumer. This is particularly relevant through our own brands such as AXA, Korvbrödsbagarn and Kungsörnen. The initiative is part of our long-term commitment to drive the transition toward the agriculture of the future and ensure food production that stands the test of time,” says Claes Johansson.

Certified products will be available in Swedish retail by the end of 2026.
