The Lantmännen model provides stability in uncertain times
Lantmännen’s Annual General Meeting was held on the third of May. Here, Lantmännen's Chairman Per Lindahl talks about issues that are high on the agenda and the cooperative's role in creating profitable and sustainable farming.
Lantmännen’s success is based on cooperation. We are no ordinary company, we are an agricultural cooperative owned by 18,000 Swedish farmers. Our aim is clear – to make farming thrive. Through our business model, we create the conditions for long-term, profitable and sustainable Swedish farming. We call it the Lantmännen model. Through the Lantmännen model, all profit from the business is reinvested in agriculture which creates value for Swedish farmers. Either directly as a dividend to our members or indirectly through investments in the future, such as research to develops more sustainable cultivation methods.

When we gathered for the meeting, we summed up what has been an unusual year for agriculture. A year of war in Europe, an energy crisis, sky-high prices of agricultural inputs and now, during the beginning of 2023, an inflation rate higher than in decades. Unpredictability is now expected; we must continue to be prepared for unexpected events. Despite the challenges, Lantmännen is standing firm and we are sticking to our long-term strategies. Farming of the Future is our vision for profitable and sustainable farming with increased production and reduced climate impact. With Farming of the Future, we are driving sustainable development in our industry and we are at the global forefront of developing farming with knowledge, technology and new and improved methods. All with the aim of achieving a world-class cooperative.
We continue to be a company that leads the way and inspires young people to dare to invest in their agricultural businesses. In this way, we get closer to the goal, creating Farming of the Future together.
When we look ahead, there are several important strategic areas to continue to drive and develop.
Sweden’s food strategy must be updated, and we have recently submitted our concrete proposals on how it should be sharpened and made more operational and tangible on our farms. Our input includes proposals in ten focus areas with concrete and implementable activities that contribute to the strategy's vision and objectives. The proposals aim to secure a robust Swedish food chain with increased production through clearer objectives and reinforcements in areas such as innovation, exports, supply chain readiness and sustainability. Some of the issues we raise are an urgent need to establish domestic production of mineral fertilizer, major investments in climate adaptation for Swedish agriculture and strengthening of the profitability and competitiveness of the farms.

With both an uncertain world and a cooperative in forward motion, the Annual General Meeting was, however, an important opportunity for us to pause and be proud of what we have achieved together. Lantmännen’s investments in a thriving Swedish farming continue to deliver good results. We continue to be a company that leads the way and inspires young people to dare to invest in their agricultural businesses. In this way, we get closer to the goal, creating Farming of the Future together.
