Lantmännen brings together business and political leaders to discuss energy ahead of the election
“Energy is central to the continued development of our operations in Norrköping, and cooperation with local politicians and the municipal leadership is important for creating the right conditions. To continue the transition away from fossil fuels, companies need clear and long-term conditions at both the national and local levels. Our cooperation with E.ON is a concrete example of how industrial companies and energy providers can work together,” says Fredrik Krook, Managing Director of Lantmännen Biorefineries.
During the visit, Lantmännen presented its operations in Norrköping and plans for future development. The discussions covered energy supply at both the national and local levels, as well as the conditions required for companies to continue developing and advancing their energy transition.
One concrete example is the energy cooperation between Lantmännen and E.ON at Händelö. The process steam used in Lantmännen’s production comes from E.ON’s adjacent combined heat and power plant. The cooperation is part of the industrial symbiosis at Händelö, where energy and residual streams are utilized across different operations.
The visit also included a tour of Lantmännen’s biorefinery and concluded with a press briefing.

Lantmännen Biorefineries in Norrköping:
At the biorefinery, grain and by-products from the food industry are refined into products including food ingredients, feed, biofuels, biogas, and green chemicals. The Händelö biorefinery began operations in 2001 and is now the largest ethanol producer in the Nordic region. Annual production capacity is approximately 230,000 cubic meters of ethanol. According to Lantmännen, the ethanol has a climate impact that is more than 95 percent lower than that of fossil fuels. In 2023, a new wheat protein production facility was also inaugurated in Norrköping, representing an investment of SEK 800 million.
