New district taking shape – Lantmännen Real Estate and Kävlinge Municipality develop Åstaden

Press releases, 2025
Lantmännen Real Estate and Kävlinge Municipality have signed a planning agreement to develop Åstaden, a new district on the historic former sugar mill site between Kävlinge and Furulund. The area is planned to accommodate around 1,900 homes in a mix of building types, together with retail, a school, childcare and other community services in a green setting along the Kävlinge river.

Åstaden will have a unique location between Kävlinge and Furulund and become a natural link between the two communities. The industrial character of the area will be preserved and integrated into a green, nature-rich environment, complemented by recreational routes and close access to key public services. Combined with its position in western Skåne and the area’s strong industrial history, this creates strong foundations for long-term sustainable urban development.

Åstaden is a long-term urban development project designed to support Kävlinge’s growth and create new opportunities for housing, business and public services.

“Åstaden is a large-scale property development project, and we see significant potential in transforming the former sugar mill site into a vibrant urban district. In close collaboration with the municipality, we are now drawing up a detailed development plan that benefits all parties – the municipality, residents, the environment and Lantmännen,” says Petter Melin, regional manager at Lantmännen Real Estate.

“With both its natural setting and strategic location, Åstaden is a unique urban development project that will help strengthen the municipality’s attractiveness for residents and businesses alike. We look forward to working with Lantmännen Real Estate to create a sustainable and vibrant district together,” says Sofia Öreberg, head of strategic planning at Kävlinge Municipality.

Work on the first phase of the detailed development plan has begun. As the process continues, further needs for investigation will be identified and a timetable for the next steps will be developed, with the aim of having the plan adopted by 2028. During the planning phase, Lantmännen Real Estate will actively seek business partners and potential buyers to realize different parts of the Åstaden project.
