Lantmännen comments on the government’s investments in civil defense

News, 2025

Lantmännen welcomes the government’s decision to strengthen and accelerate investments in a stronger and more resilient food preparedness, and to initiate the establishment of emergency reserves with both funding and practical measures.

“It is now crucial that the responsible authorities, together with industry, decisively accelerate the build-up of robust food preparedness. The intent to speed up the establishment of reserves by making use of this year’s strong grain harvest is important — the conditions are favorable, and such high volumes cannot be taken for granted in the future,” says Per Arfvidsson, Deputy CEO of Lantmännen.

Lantmännen is positive that food preparedness is gaining greater prominence in preparedness discussions and that there is consensus that resilient food preparedness requires strong production and a strong agricultural sector. At the same time, politicians and authorities bear a major responsibility to move from inquiries to concrete action — but industry also needs to take responsibility, according to Lantmännen.

“As the largest food sector company in Sweden, Lantmännen is ready to do its part. We have long been involved in food preparedness in Finland and have contributed to building preparedness in Norway. Now we are prepared to act swiftly in Sweden as well,” says Per Arfvidsson.

Lantmännen welcomes continued collaboration, investments, and ambitious targets to strengthen Sweden’s food preparedness.

“We also look forward to broadening the discussion on how to ensure preparedness over time. Today, only half of the food we consume is produced in Sweden, which makes us vulnerable. For long-term preparedness, we need to create significant growth in Swedish agriculture and food production,” says Per Arfvidsson.

Lantmännen further emphasizes the importance of storing not only grain but also mineral fertilizer, energy, and fuel.
