On Wednesday, Lantmännen held an information meeting at the construction site, attended among others by the head of business development from Lidköping Municipality. The buildings are largely completed externally, and work is now continuing inside with installation and assembly of the process equipment. The facility is designed to receive around 40,000 tonnes of peas and faba beans per year and to process the raw material into roughly 7,000 tonnes of protein isolate for the food industry.
Lars-Gunnar Edh, Head of the Agriculture Division at Lantmännen, describes the investment:
“The pea protein plant will have the capacity to receive around 40,000 tonnes of peas and faba beans per year, and achieving that level of raw material supply requires a substantial increase in production.”
“This will not happen overnight, but we are already seeing a gradual increase and clear interest going forward.”
For farmers, the investment could mean that more of them choose to grow peas and faba beans as a complement to other crops. Sustainability is a core theme – legumes fix nitrogen in the soil, which reduces the need for mineral fertiliser. The project also includes treatment and reuse of process water, along with utilisation of side streams, and the facility has received support from Naturvårdsverkets Klimatklivet.
The investment is also part of strengthening Sweden’s food security – an issue that Lantmännen has championed for many years, with a focus on increased food production and more processing in Sweden.
