In order to slow down climate change and ensure productive agriculture tomorrow as well, the climate impact of food production needs to be reduced.

Lantmännen is driving the development towards the agriculture of the future with more sustainable food and energy systems. Through research and new technology, agricultural inputs can be optimised and yields increased.

Lantmännen is dependent on well-functioning ecosystems that accommodate a variety of species. That is why we work actively in different parts of the value chain to reduce the impact of cultivation on the environment and benefit biodiversity. 

The question is often asked whether organic or conventional is the solution to sustainable food production. Lantmännen's view is that what is needed is the development of both conventional and organic farming methods.

Lantmännen works actively to ensure that the use of plant nutrients does not lead to nutrient leakage into watercourses, and to close the cycle of nutrients.

Soy is an important raw material in the production of feed. In several places in the world, cultivation can have negative consequences for people and the environment. Lantmännen supports and buys responsibly produced soy.

A third of the world's countries are currently threatened by water shortages. To ensure everyone's access to clean water, from a global perspective, we need to achieve more efficient water use and avoid over-abstraction from risk areas.

The starting point for Lantmännen is that we want safe products at all levels that our customers and consumers feel confident in, and that no uncertified sludge should be returned to the fields.

Straw shorteners inhibit the growth of the length of the grain so that it does not break or lie down. We work for a sustainable use of chemicals in cultivation, to minimize risks to health and the environment.

Plastic is used in packaging to protect products and extend shelf life. Its use has increased sharply over the past 50 years, with negative consequences for the climate and the environment. Lantmännen's strategy ensures responsible and sustainable use.

To meet market demands in our food business, we use eggs from free-range* hens in our food products.

Food waste must be reduced in all parts of the food chain. Lantmännen works actively, from field to fork, for an efficient use of resources and the reuse of raw materials to minimize waste.

Origin and transparency are important issues for us at Lantmännen. We use Swedish grain as far as possible in our Swedish range and, increasingly, Swedish beans as well.

In addition to nutrients, cultivated crops can also absorb unwanted substances that are naturally present in arable land. One of these substances is cadmium. The levels are low in cereals relative to some other foods, but since much of the food we eat is grain-based, it is still important to control and minimize cadmium levels.

We ensure responsibly produced palm oil by only sourcing RSPO-certified palm oil. We are also working to accelerate the transition together with industry colleagues and interest groups.

Lantmännen's work with sustainable plant protection is based on meeting requirements for the least possible environmental impact and risks to health and food safety, and at the same time providing our farmers with the conditions for good profitability and yield.
