Our four grains

Wheat, oats, rye and barley - grain-based foods provide a lot of nutrition and have many health benefits. In addition, they are an affordable option in the grocery store.

For centuries, cereals have played an important role for people in Sweden. For example, in the 1700s, when food was scarce, cereals - in the form of porridge, gruel and bread - made up about 80 percent of the food.

We used to eat a lot of rye and barley, but a little wheat. Today, however, wheat is the most common grain in the Nordic countries. To this day, cereals are a very important staple food, grown on almost half of the world's total cultivated area.
