Organic and conventional

The question is often asked whether organic or conventional is the solution to sustainable food production. Lantmännen's view is that what is needed is the development of both conventional and organic farming methods.

We are becoming more and more people who should eat and feel good within the framework of what our only planet can produce. To provide for the entire world's population, a change in the way food is produced and consumed is required. The greatest impact and potential lies in the cultivation stage.

It is at the cultivation stage that a large part of the value in Lantmännen's products is created - in the field, the raw material is created. This is also where Lantmännen has the greatest opportunity to influence in a more sustainable direction. By developing cultivation in Sweden, we can offer farmers tools for conversion and consumers products with a lower environmental impact.

The road to sustainable farming is about managing and balancing several different challenges. It is about taking advantage of the best from different production methods and aids and about taking into account local cultivation conditions and solutions. A starting point for Lantmännen is that both organic and conventional farming need to be developed in order to be sustainable in the long term. Organic is not a final solution to achieve sustainable food supply, but an important development track in a sustainable direction. In conventional, new sustainability concepts are taking important steps in that direction.

We work throughout the value chain to develop both conventional and organic farming. Swedish grain cultivation is already far ahead when it comes to sustainable production, but the development of cultivation is constantly ongoing. Lantmännen works with, among other things, variety development, chemical-free seed treatment, advisory services to farmers and further development of technology and methods. The development of sustainable grain programs is also an important part of Lantmännen's strategic business development.
