How it works
Climate & Nature

Climate & Nature is an important tool for transitioning to more sustainable food production that achieves the climate goals by 2050 within the Paris Agreement.

How the cultivation program works

In Lantmännen's Climate & Nature for Future Agriculture cultivation programme, grain is grown according to criteria that reduce climate impact and benefit biodiversity. With Climate & Nature, we drive development, meet market demand for sustainably produced food and create opportunities for farmers to reduce the climate and environmental impact of farming. Since 2015, the products from the cultivation program have reduced the climate footprint by up to 45 percent and the cultivation today includes wheat, barley, rye and oats.

Traceability and mass balance

Measures in the cultivation programme that do not directly affect the raw material itself, such as fossil-free fuel in the tank or the construction of larch plots, are contracted according to the so-called mass balance principle. Mass balance means that the grain that has been grown on farms that are part of the program is mixed together with other grain in our product flow. As a consequence, the measures included in the program cannot be traced back to farm level and that we therefore cannot guarantee that the content of the particular product you have purchased is grown according to Climate & Nature.

Instead, we contract Climate and Nature grain corresponding to the volume we sell and always take into account any increased demand. The cost that special management throughout the grain chain would entail would have driven up the market price of grain with improved climate performance in a, in our opinion, unnecessary way. Something that in turn would have made it more difficult for us to achieve our common climate goals together. However, we can guarantee that all grain is responsibly produced, comes from Swedish sustainable agriculture and that by buying Climate & Nature you directly contribute to us being able to convert larger parts of our cultivation.

A dynamic cultivation program

The cultivation program is dynamic and continuously developed to apply the latest knowledge and technology. New measures are being added continuously. The programme has a measurable effect and has resulted in significant emission reductions from the cultivation of cereals since its inception in 2015. At present, we have phased out the vast majority of fossil emissions, and we will in the future focus more on biogenic emissions in the form of reducing nitrous oxide emissions from the arable land and increase carbon sequestration.

* Up to 45% less climate impact compared to average Swedish grain cultivation in 2015.

How we calculate

Since we started cultivating according to Climate & Nature, we have seen major changes. Especially in what we see and hear out in the  fields — there is a much richer animal life.
