If the crisis or war comes, we cannot take our food for granted. Today, only every second bite we eat is Swedish. We need to strengthen our food preparedness. Sweden's farmers are at the forefront of protecting our food – but they need backing.

There is a strong desire to contribute, but few know how. Your effort can start with something as simple as boiling macaroni for dinner. Eating and shopping Swedish is more than a matter of taste – it is a way to strengthen our food defenses.

Together, we take responsibility from field to fork.

* The survey was conducted by Novus on behalf of Lantmännen, via web interviews in Novus' randomly recruited Sweden panel, which guarantees representative results. The survey is based on 1,084 interviews conducted with the Swedish public aged 18-84 during the period 15–22 August 2024.

Swedish farmers can
and want to produce more food

Today, Sweden can support itself with up to 50 percent of the food produced by Swedish farmers and food producers. This means that we largely rely on the ability to import food. That is not enough, and we are not equipped to face crisis situations. Robust food preparedness – and ultimately stronger crisis preparedness – starts with competitive and profitable Swedish agriculture.

Your daily grocery store choices have a big impact. We often talk about the extensive and costly changes in the transition, but when it comes to our food, there is also enormous power in small and conscious actions. When you choose farmer-owned in the store, farmers get paid more and can make the important investments required to strengthen Swedish agriculture and food production. Then we not only secure our food, but also build the food preparedness required for the future – for ourselves, for our children, and for future generations.

Exports are the way to strengthened preparedness

Lantmännen is working to significantly increase Swedish food production for both domestic consumption and export. Increased Swedish food exports create growth and profitability and are at the same time the most cost-effective way to strengthen Swedish preparedness capacity. In the event of a crisis or crop failure, export flows can be quickly redirected to domestic consumption. Sweden has agriculture and food production that is at the forefront – if the potential is exploited, there is every opportunity to increase both production and food exports.

Stock up for dinner. And for Sweden.

Sweden's probably most important grocery bag consists of products from Swedish farmers.

By choosing Swedish and buying farmer-owned, you can stock up on your dinner and your pantry. But at the same time, buying farmer-owned products every time is a way of influencing in a larger perspective – a way of contributing to future-proofing sustainable agriculture and food production, and thus to strengthening Sweden's preparedness for crisis. 3 tips for a strong food defense

Our daily choices at the grocery store can impact society more than you think. Here are three pieces of advice for those who want to contribute to a stronger Swedish preparedness through their grocery bag:

1. Choose Swedish and farmer-owned as often as possible
In many cases, it is easier than you think to choose Swedish and farmer-owned food in the store. One way is to look for origin labeling.

2. Read the labels
Read carefully. The goods you take for granted as Swedish can come from far away. Nevertheless, many goods that you do not believe are produced in Sweden can actually do so.

3. Make demands
Tell the store when they have a poor selection of Swedish meat, dairy and grains. The more people who react, the greater the impact.

An information campaign

With the information campaign Matvärnet and Probably Sweden's most important grocery bag, Lantmännen wants to increase knowledge about how everyone, from consumers to our politicians, can be involved in future-proofing Swedish food and food production. A social debate that Lantmännen has been involved in for several years.

Reinvesting in the future of agriculture

With operations throughout the chain from field to fork, we create value from the arable land and reinvest the profits in the agriculture of the future. Either as a distribution to our members, 17,000 Swedish farmers, or to research and innovation that strengthens the food chain. Keep an eye out for Lantmännen's green sprout next time you shop to contribute to sustainable agriculture and to future-proof our food.
