Lantmännen is an agricultural cooperative and Northern Europe’s leader in agriculture, machinery, bioenergy and food products.
Demand for raw materials from cultivation is increasing, while there is an increasing focus on the challenges of the future supply of food and energy. Lantmännen’s knowledge and proximity to cultivation provides us with unique opportunities to contribute to more sustainable production and at the same time create profitable added values for health and the environment.
Our responsibility from field to fork supports our ambition to contribute to the future need of bioenergy and food. We take on three challenges, shared by actors within energy and food supply in the world.
Three challenges for future bioenergy and food supply:
Production of food accounts for a large part of the world's climate impact. To ensure productive farming and food production in the future, the climate impact must decrease especially in cultivation but also in production and transports.
With almost 9 billion people and still one planet, we need to be as efficient as possible and use resources wisely and minimize loss and waste. In all steps from field to fork.
What we eat and how we eat matters. For both health and the environment. Increased knowledge and more conscious choices are needed to promote a healthy lifestyle. That is food habits for healthy people and a healthy planet.
An important part of our business development is to develop and offer products and services with profitable sustainable added values, for health and the environment. Our efforts are focused specifically on actions for an even more sustainable cultivation.
Our strategy for sustainable business is based in our brand promise Together we take responsibility from field to fork. We take lead in issues as responsibility in the supply chain, drive the development of sustainable cultivation, ensure safe and resource efficient production and develop products with profitable sustainable added values.
The direction is clear; we want to contribute to solutions for food and bio energy and change to a biobased circular economy. We will achieve it by creating a sustainable grain value chain, where we use all resources and optimize the return and yield from cultivation and production.
For good results, focus and efforts are needed. We work in four focus areas encompassing our important responsibility issues throughout the value chain and in which we manage opportunities and challenges.
The number of people that the planet needs to feed, within its ecological boundaries, is increasing. To feed the entire population, we need a change in production and consumption. The main impact on climate and potential for improvement is within cultivation. That is why Lantmännen takes an active role in the development of more sustainable farming where we can make a difference for climate and nature.
Safe and resource efficient production
Our production strives to be as efficient as possible and at the same time safe for our employees and others working there. We work continuously to make use of resources in all steps from production of the raw material, use of energy in refining to packaging and transports. Our work to reduce climate impact from our production is supported and directed by our climate strategy.
Sustainable solutions in the farming, for energy and food are keys to a sustainable development. Our products with sustainable added values are based on a strong value chain, where we optimize the benefits and minimize negative impact in all steps. It can be biobased renewable raw material, climate efficient and environmentally positive products or food produced for a good health.
Our key issues
Our key issues based on impact on people, the environment and long-term profitability.
Lantmännen’s mission is to create thriving farming. The cooperative ownership model is central to long-term economic stability and endurance. The results of operations go back to Swedish farmers and are also reinvested in the business, where research and development play a key role.
Research & Innovation
Lantmännen’s knowledge and operations in every stage represent an opportunity to drive and contribute to development in the grain value chain. We focus on research that can develop and move the entire grain sector. Lantmännen’s research foundation invests in research in areas such as plant breeding, biological crop protection, use of by-products, resource management, health and eating habits.
Quality and traceability
Lantmännen’s knowledge and presence in all stages from field to fork gives us unique conditions for ensuring control and traceability of our products. The green sprout on food from Lantmännen is our guarantee of responsibly produced food, with quality and food safety playing a key role.
Environmental impact from cultivation of raw materials
For grain, Lantmännen’s most important raw material, long-term sustainability concerns the carbon footprint, soil fertility and yields over time, water, use of plant nutrients and crop protection, and effects on biodiversity. For soy, palm oil and other imported commodities, there are also social risks to manage, such as working conditions and human rights. We are working with farmers, customers and suppliers for more sustainable forms of cultivation and we have high requirements in our sourcing of raw materials. We are also developing new concepts and products with lower environmental impacts and sought-after added values.
A large proportion of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions come from the food industry. From a lifecycle perspective, a large part of the climate impact for Lantmännen’s products is in the cultivation stage. Our own processing operations also cause carbon dioxide emissions, primarily through use of energy and transport. Our climate target is a 40 percent reduction in these emissions by 2020, with 2009 as the base year. Measures we are working on include energy efficiency and phasing out of fuel oil.
Other important issues
Lantmännen’s responsibility also includes many other issues crucial to a well functioning and long-term successful business. Work environment and safety, leadership and teamwork, and business ethics are a few examples. Product-related areas such as origin, health properties and product information are particularly important for some stakeholders.
